Smoke Alarm Installation
Smoke alarms are early detection and warning systems in properties, which alert occupiers in the event of a fire. Smoke alarms save lives.
What is a smoke alarm system?
Smoke detection and alert systems are recommended in all buildings. They provide early warnings of the dangers of fire, to enable quick and safe exit.
A smoke alarm detects smoke and sounds an alarm. A smoke detector is strictly a sensing device only.
Systems may be hardwired to the property's main electric system, or battery powered.
Hardwired smoke alarms are more dependable as they are connected on a power supply. Once the alarm sounds, it will not stop until turned off. In the event of power interruptions, the alarms have battery backups for continuous operation.
Battery powered smoke alarms depend solely on the batteries and so must be maintained and tested regularly to ensure functionality.
The law in Scotland
In Scotland, as of 1 February 2022, legislation requires that every home has interlinked fire alarms. Being interlinked means if one alarm goes off, all alarms go off.
It is also a requirement that there should be adequate Carbon Monoxide protection.
Minimum protection required
Landlords and homeowners are required to meet the minimum standards to be compliant with the regulations.
However, it is strongly recommended to get the highest level of protection to create a safe living environment.
Hallways and Landings: Smoke Alarms
Living Room: Smoke Alarm
Kitchen: Heat Alarm
Kitchen: Carbon Monoxide Detector
Highest protection recommended
To meet the highest protection advised by British Standard BS5839-6:2019, smoke alarms should be also installed in the dining area and each bedroom. This will help detecting alarms that are closer to the fire.
Bedroom: Smoke Alarm
Converted Attic: Smoke Alarm
Garage: Heat Alarm
Bathroom: no alarms required
